What Are the Odds?

There’s always a possibility of running into wildlife when you’re on a hiking trail, but what 26 year old Ashley Swendsen experienced Thursday morning was more than she’d ever imagined.

Five months pregnant, Swendsen walked on a hiking trail near Colorado Springs when she noticed a black bear following ten feet behind her. She thought the bear was more curious than malice, but didn’t take any chances. She ran, scrambling up an embankment, and was hit by a slow-moving car. Luckily, she and her unborn child were unharmed. Still… What are the odds? You can make this stuff up!

Do you have any strange “what are the odds” type story you’d like to share? I’d love to hear it.

  1. Wow, thats pretty lucky that she and her unborn baby weren't hurt. Seriously, what are the odd of that happening.

No good stories to add, just wanted to say Wow!

  2. Ok . . . not quite a bear and car. But I have Crohn's disease. And have spent most of my life fighting it. Then four years ago, I got out of bed--and fell on the floor. Appeared I had M.S. What are the friggin' odds of THAT bit of bad luck? However, after a year, the M.S. symptoms subsided and knock wood have not returned.

  3. I came by to thank you for commenting on my blog & to have a look at yours...but I don't see any writing here. I can see the post titles & the comment links & images at the end, but nothing in between...
I'll try again from home later.

  5. Real life can be stranger than fiction, that's for sure!

  6. Lynette, I'm trying my hand at some romantic short story in six parts. I'm hungry for some good criticism.

  7. Oh my gosh, I just gasped out loud! What a story.

And that's just the kind of thing we're supposed to put our characters through... just when you think it couldn't happen, or that things couldn't get worse, BAM!

  8. That's so scary!
Wow. I'm sure I do have a story, but I can't think of one right now. I'm so glad she's okay.

  9. In a fiction story that would seem like over the edge, almost too much to throw at a poor woman! Afterall, our fiction has to be believable!

  13. Good Lord!!!! Reminds me of a show I saw on "I Survived" about a guy whose arm got stuck in a corn picker. He tried to cut his glove off, and didn't know he was cutting his fingers off. He tried to jam the engine, but then it caught on fire. Then he ended up cutting his ARM off!!!!!! With a knife!!!!

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

  15. Erica: Sorry to hear about your bad experiences. Hopefully, the M.S. never returns. *hugs*

Lana: I hope you were able to see the blog later on. I'm not sure what was going on.

Lakeviewer: I wish I could help you, but I have very limited time. Taking care of twins will do that to you. Plus, I have my own writing, and I belong to two critique groups. I really can't do more than I already am. I suggest you either join a critique group or start one. Write a post on your blog that you're searching for a critique partner or group. There are a lot of writers who blog. I'm sure you'll be able to find someone who can help you. Good luck.

Bina: What a story! That reminds me of the guy who was pinned in a cave when he was mountain climbing. He had to cut his arm off to free himself, too. I can't even imagine having to do that.

  16. Real story? No kidding? I'm a city girl through and through, so no way it will happen to me.
