Pet Talk

Since we talked about adding pets to your stories yesterday, I thought you might be interested in what The Today Show had to say about dogs. They listed the top five smartest dogs.

1. Border collie
2. Poodle
3. German shepard
4. Golden retriever
5. Doberman

According to Discovery Channel, the best kid-friendly breeds are (in no particular order):

- Golden retriever
- Labrador
- Boxer
- Beagle
- West Highland white terriers (Westies)
- Shetland sheepdog

Do you have any pet facts you’d like to share?

  1. Both lists are wrong because neither includes the smarter than smart, loyal, kid-friendly, excellent watch dog breed of Boston Terriers. :)

  2. I have a Doberman/Lab mix, and a German Shepherd/Lab mix, both of whom are insanely smart (major reason I chose those breeds). Of course, super-smart working dogs are also some of the most stubborn, infuriating dogs to work with... ;-)

    Another pet fact for you:

Goldfish and Leopard Geckos can both live for up to 30 years in captivity, if properly cared for.

  3. Angie: They forgot all about beautiful Bichon Frises, too. ;)

Jamie D.: No wonder my goldfish lasted so long. I lost count after ten years.

  4. My granddog is a Whippet. He's affectionate, great with kids, hardly ever barks, loves to play and it's fun to watch him run - seems like an ideal pet to me.

  5. Mine isn't on either list. She's a mutt, though...part King Charles Spaniel.

  6. I have a golden. I believe he was sorely over bred. A digger from the beginning (he's 10) he still ruins the yard at will.

  7. I'm a huge golden retriever fan! My Haley Belle is eleven! She has been awesome with my kids and is definitely a member of our family

  8. I had a dachshund growing up that was part human, I swear. She understood things that dogs shouldn't. Could pick up a ball, roll over, grab it out of her mouth with her front feet and toss it, then get up and go after it. Very self sufficient!

Now we have a rat terrier that is the absolute best, couldn't ask for a better family member.

  9. Parrotlets weigh about 4oz but think they're mighty like a macaw. Here's a video of our rescued parrotlet Zel, who sadly is no longer with us. I miss her... sniff!

  10. We have a bordie collie and yes they are intelligent to an uncanny degree--also willful and stubborn--if you can't keep them busy working cattle or sheep--they need serious daily walks. We also have a german shepherd cross--smart, loving, loyal--and far more lethargic than the collie.

  11. we owned a golden retriever and while my husband thought she was merely selectively intelligent (it was his dog) I have to say, THAT DOG WAS DUMB! I loved her anyway... but how did that breed make the smart dog list?!

  12. Pet Fact: Budgies can learn up to 100 words & phrases... their voices are just so tiny that you might not notice unless you listen reeeally carefully!

As for the dog list... well, I've always wanted a doberman!

  13. CKHB: That's a cute bird. It remind me of a love bird. Sorry to hear that he's no longer with you.
