The Value of Online Classes

The value of online classes may escape some writers, but not me. I’ve taken quite a few courses over the last two years and have learned so much more than with any how-to-write book. Why? Because most of the instructors critiqued my work based on the lessons presented and the assignments given. Some of the instructors went a step beyond that by assisting us with other issues not covered in the course.

Because I was a teacher, I can appreciate the time and work that goes into not only the lesson plans for these classes, but each critique as well. This weekend, I participated in my first online class as an instructor. How exciting and nerve wracking all at once. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the type of course where I could take questions or interact with the group, but it’s a start. Once a teacher, always a teacher, right?

Soon, I’ll be embarking on a new adventure as a writing coach/editor and online instructor. With my background as a teacher and writer, this is a perfect fit for me. I can’t wait to begin.

What types of classes would you (if you were taking courses) like to see offered?

  1. That does sound like a perfect fit! Hope you have a great time with it.

I'd most definitely do writing courses. ;)

  2. Considering how many have signed up for the Muse Online Writing Conference, there's a lot of people out there who could use this!
Past & present tense. I do okay, but I'm sure my editor would be thrilled if I did it better!

  3. Hi Lynette, thanks so much for visiting my blog! I hope you'll come back often. I took several distance learning classes from the Institute of Children's Literature. I don't believe I've ever taken an online course, but I must admit I'm curious. Thanks for the post about the Muse Online Conference - wow, how exciting!

  4. Amy: I took several courses through The Institute of Children's Lit. Neat! Of course, that was back when I was still a teen, so I was writing for kids, but still neat to see someone else who did that.

    L. Diane: I'm looking forward to the MOWC, but am a little nervous because I signed up for so much. LOL

Janna: Thanks. Hey, I'll let you know once I get started, maybe you'll be interested in one of 'em.

  5. Enjoyed reading this as I just returned from a full day of teaching (but down on a campus). It's exhilarating work, absolutely.

  6. I have only taken one online class. I would be interested in more, especially if you can submit something and get feedback on it.

  7. Good luck--it sounds like a wonderful position. :) Hmmm. If I were to take an online class, I'd love learning about anything writing related--including debates on technique, history, reading vs writing, and panels that make me think deeper than usual. Critting would be useful as well.

  8. I wondered about online classes. I am glad to hear from someone who has taken them and is now teaching. How wonderful for you and those who will be learning from you. At some time in the future I may look into taking an online course.
