WOW

During the past couple of months, I’ve acquired some new readers. *waves* Welcome. Kick back and enjoy the conversations. Some of you may not realize this, but I run a free
writers’ support group called Writers on Writing. Our group is growing and open to anyone who’d like to join.

Writers on Writing is an exciting networking opportunity, but not a critique group (although, crits can be done off loop). WOW is all about supporting writers through their journey. We give cyber hugs when someone’s been rejected, celebrate the acquisition of an agent, and party with the sales or releases of new books. We also love to talk about writing. If one of us has a question about the craft, for example, someone will surely have the answer. We draw attention to great blogs, announce irresistible online writing classes, and point the way to some eye-catching articles about the craft or industry. If this sounds interesting, send me an e-mail to lynnette_labelle (at) hotmail (dot) com. Make sure you spell my name with two n’s or I won’t get your message. Please put “WOW” in the subject so I know it’s not spam. Then, I’ll send you an invitation and you can begin sharing your journey with us. Looking forward to seeing you on the other side.

For those of you who already have a support group, how has it helped you on your journey?

  1. It's definitely helped me to connect. Last year I joined two online groups and have made some great connections.

My blog now has 49 subscribers (not bad for an unknown in a northern Michigan town of 1100 people!). On a monthly basis I feature an author interview/book giveaway, as well as a mid-month writer anecdote. I've found all of these volunteers from these groups.

It's so nice to "meet" people who are interested in the same things! (Because my family tells me that I bore them with my writer-chatter)

  2. I'm coming to realize that a support group is so essential as a writer. There's just nothing like having another writer there to pat you on the back--no one else understands the roller coaster of writing quite like another writer. And who else will get your frustration when you discover a mountain of adverbs in a story or your jubilation at coming up with a new plot twist? Writing is a lonely activity...party of one. But a writer's support group makes writing feel like a shared activity, like you can just pop your head above a cubicle and give a wave. Yours is an excellent idea, Lynnette. Very cool.

  3. I just joined and I've already met a bunch of new writer friends. I've found more blogs to read and gained a few more followers. I recommend it to any writer out there.

  5. I have a group that meets in real life...my writing soulmates I call them. I joined the group when I was very much a newbie- I've learned so much from them and have grown as a writer. They are so supportive. I couldn't imagine this journey without other writers to cheer with and for, to commiserate with.

  9. Happy New Year, Lynette!

I just started a support group for authors with debut books coming out in 2010 or 2011 from small or independent presses. After trying to find ways to market my upcoming book, I realized there was a need.

I'm happy to say it has helped a LOT. We have a great group of authors with many different ideas. And it's always nice to make new writer friends! :)
