You’re only as good as your twist. Well, your book is anyway. Avid readers have seen many storylines done over and over again. To catch their eye, you need to come up with a new way of telling the same type of story. But, that can be tricky. You have to know your genre. What’s been done and how can you change your story so that it stands out from the rest?
A perfect example of this was on the TV program called “90210”. One of the characters had “cried wolf”, telling everyone that a teacher had sexually harassed her. This wasn’t true. Although, I felt the writers were hinting at the possibility. Eventually, she admitted she had lied (just before he lost his teaching job over the ordeal). While this has been done before, what I haven’t seen is what is about to happen next. Judging by the preview, it appears this teacher will actually make a pass at the girl. How perfect is that? Nobody will believe her if she says anything. Very nice twist.

ReplyDeleteI can’t think of one off the top of my head, but I love reading books with twists that I didn’t see coming.
ReplyDeleteIn essence, every story is the same, only twisted up a bit. I find it hard to get a twist if I'm inspired by a character or setting-basically the book just twists and turns its own way!
ReplyDeleteWhen Dumbledore sacrificed himself in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" so Harry could get the horcrux from the cave... and it was a fake.

My all time favorite twist was in the movie The Usual Suspects. I won't divulge the twist just in case someone has not watched it and would want to. It's an oldie but goodie.
