Have You Heard About "Modelland"?

Have you heard? Tyra Banks is writing a three book fantasy series. The talk-show host and former model signed with Delacorte Press (an imprint of Random House Children’s Books). The novels are for “young people”. Although, I’m not sure if that means YA or MG. “The series is about a girl trying to keep up with the beauty game at an elite school for supermodels.” The first novel, “Modelland”, comes out in the summer of 2011.

I’m curious as to whether she’s actually writing the books or if she’s hired a ghostwriter. You never know with celebrities. I could see it either way. What do you think?

  1. Interesting. I hear that Tyra Banks is pretty hands on with stuff, but I'm not sure if she hired a ghostwriter or wrote it herself. I, too, could see it either way.

  2. Sounds like an interesting premise and with her name on it, I bet it will sell. Whoever writes it, I hope the publisher holds it to the same level of quality of all their other writers.

  3. Sounds dreadful to me, regardless of who writes it.

  4. I'd be interested to read it to see how moral issues that are conflicts in the modelling industry are portrayed as well as the whole self-esteem concept!

  5. I believe what makes it a fantasy is that the models have superpowers. I don't know if she's writing the series or hiring someone from within Bankable Prods.

  6. I heard and I rolled my eyes. It's supposed to be a cross between models and Harry Potter. Ha! I might read it just to see how she manages that!

  7. Does make you wonder about a ghost writer. I don't think it's fair that celebrities can get a book published about any and everything and authors who have worked long and hard can't. Okay that's my rant for now.

  8. I don't know...On one hand, Tyra seems to be all over the board career wise, and she does know that particular lifestyle well enough to make up a story on it. But, I just can't see her writing a book.

  9. That is interesting. I would love to know the answer to your question also.

  10. I'm sure some people will buy the books because they're interested in that sort of story, but I have to wonder how many people will purchase the novels out of curiousity about what or whether Tyra could write.

  11. I hope it's ghost-written. Not that Tyra couldn't potentially be a great writer, but everyone starts out kinda bad at this and needs to work at it.

And I doubt she has been practicing writing for the past few years. I would be much happier knowing a ghost writer developed her idea than knowing celebrity trumps ability when it comes to getting published.

(And of course it does, but publishers generally demand a certain level of quality regardless. That's what ghost writers are for.)
