Could've Been Me

Actress Natasha Richardson, wife of Liam Neeson, mother of two, died yesterday of a head injury. What a shocker! Tuesday, at the Mont Tremblant ski resort in Quebec, Richardson was descending a beginner’s run during a private lesson. Near the bottom of the run, in a section known as “the flats”, the actress took a spill.

Precautions were taken to ensure Richardson’s injury wasn’t serious. The ski instructor called the ski patrol. There was no bleeding or any other signs of external injuries, so Richardson was simply escorted to her room. Believing she was okay, the actress didn’t see a doctor. However, an hour later, Richardson suffered from a headache and her condition deteriorated from there.

I can’t believe such a minor head injury would cause someone’s death. Heck! That could’ve been me. The last time I went downhill skiing was many, many years ago. There’s a reason for that. I liked to go faster than my ability, which caused me to loose control. On our final run, I was going too fast when I jumped a mogul. I flew up in the air and landed on my head. I wasn’t in any pain, but was afraid to move in case I injured my spinal cord, so I waited for help. Not long after, the ski patrol rescued me with a snowmobile and sled. When we reached the bottom of the hill, I felt fine. Luckily, I was.

  1. It is shocking! Too young to die, and in such a freakish way. I've been skiing a few times and I can't remember anything threatening about 'the bunny hill.'
I have tumbled head over hills on a bigger slope though...

  2. You just never know with those kinds of injuries. I remember when I was in elementary school, a friend of mine wrecked on her sled, went home and went about her night. She had a headache when she went to bed, but didn't tell anyone. Turned out she had a concussion. She went into a coma in her sleep. Fortunately, she came out of it, but my word!

  3. It's so incredibly sad, and my heart goes out to the family.

I always worry about this sort of thing. My hubby's an avid skiier, and though he's seasoned (since he was 5), anything could happen in the blink of an eye.

  4. Thankfully you were fine, Lynette!
    So sad about Natasha...
I totally remember going skiing with you and Cherisse to LaRiviere and staying in those chalets in grade eight. Remember that?

  5. I was shocked by her death. I gave up skiing because I spent more time on the ground than on my feet. I've banged my head hard before (not skiing, though). You can't tell when it's really serious, it seems

  6. It can happen. Sadly too many people dismiss the signs of a concussion and that's when the tragedy strikes. After any bump on the head folks should aways watch out for headache, dizziness, and visual problems such as blurring, spots, or distortions.
