Seven Stages of Grief From Critiques

Abby Annis has a great post today about the seven stages of grief writers often suffer from after receiving a critique:

-shock
-denial
-anger
-guilt
-depression
-the upward turn
-acceptance and hope

Click over there and you’ll probably see a little bit of yourself in her comments about each stage. If not, you may enjoy the humor.

Have you experienced any of these emotions after receiving a critique? How do you overcome that feeling?

  2. LOL Janna!

I skip the first six and zoom right to #7. I WANT my writing/crit group to help me make it better by killing off or doing surgery on my "babies." :D

  3. Does wallowing in misery and thinking you're the worst writer in the world fall under 'depression'? I hate that step.

  4. Yeah, I probably run through all of those after a less than stellar review.
I usually bounce back on my own, but often the low is accompanied by a high such as a great review!

  6. Thanks for sharing the link. We do pass through the stages of grief after a less than stellar critique, but there are those times when the feedback is positive and we feel sooo good.

  7. I don't know about the shock or denial part. LOL I usually expect it. More like the shock is there if it is accepted!
