The other day, when my twin daughters were begging to watch Sleeping Beauty AGAIN, something hit me. Aurora aka Sleeping Beauty is their favorite princess, but Cinderella’s mine. Why don’t they share this love for Cinderella? What makes Aurora so much better in their eyes?
“Aurora has Prince Phillip,” one answered.
“And she has a pink dress,” said the other.
Hey, they’re four, what do they know about a good story? Not to say Sleeping Beauty isn’t a great story, just that I prefer Cinderella. I love that she overcomes her terrible life with her evil step-family and transforms from a pauper to a princess. But that’s just me. However, there might be more to the twins’ choice than they’ve articulated. If you think about it, Prince Phillip has a bigger role in Sleeping Beauty than Prince Charming does in Cinderella. Maybe Disney’s depiction of a great hero is what sold the story of Sleeping Beauty to my girls. Maybe they’re little romantics after all.
*sigh* It starts young, doesn’t it?
Who’s your favorite princess and why?

I was in awe of those adorable little mice in Cinderella as a little girl. To think they could TALK! It really is cute how early that stuff starts.
ReplyDeleteLOL. Oh yes, it appears it does start young, doesn't it? We're all doomed from the start. : )
ReplyDeleteAriel. She takes the bull by the horn to get what she most desires. Plus, I love that she's confident without being manipulative. And that girl can SING!
ReplyDeleteMy vote goes to Cinderella. It's a great story. I also adore the talking mice.
ReplyDeleteCinderella, definitely! I love her goodness, despite all the ugliness around her. I love her positive attitude, her patience, her work ethic, and her gentle nature. :-)
ReplyDeleteJoan of Arc. (I'm not a really a 'princess' sort of gal.)
ReplyDeleteBelle from Beauty and the Beast. She resisted idiotic Gaston, lived on a farm, sacrificed herself for her family, and had faith in something despite what others thought. She rocked it all :)
ReplyDeleteI love Disney's Belle, too. I remember watching it in the theater, with her nose in the book...and my dad leaning over and whispering, "That's you!" I was so proud!
ReplyDeleteHands down, Belle is my favorite. I think people choose their favorite Disney princesses mostly because it's someone with whom they identify most. Belle is a bookish, intelligent girl who dreams of something bigger out their in the world than that "provincial town," and I have felt those exact feelings. Not only that, but she ends up with an AMAZING library! haha
ReplyDeleteAmy's comment is hilarious. Joan of Arc was pretty excellent, was she not?
Cinderella was always my favorite. It might be because of the music and the mice and birds and the fairy godmother Disney version more than the story though. I never think of the prince first.
ReplyDeleteLOVE Cinderella. Belle too (she's a reader remember?) But Cinderella was always my favorite!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter has dark hair and I so wanted her to like Snow White, but she didn't. She liked Esmeralda. (I love her, too.) And when I asked her what she liked about her, jewelery. Yep, two years old and loved the bling.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your girls, Sleeping Beauty. Prince Phillip is so dreamy. And I love naps.

I grew up loving Cinderella, mainly due to the music and the fairy godmother. Then I fell in love with Belle the first time I saw Beauty and the Beast, mainly due to her reading habits.
ReplyDeletemy two favorites (and i see i'm in good company) -- Belle in Beauty and the Beast, and Cinderella, but i like the Ever After version of it the best.
ReplyDeleteI see some mommies who are romantics as well. ;)

I like Belle in Disney's version of Beauty and the Beast. She sees beyond the surface to love the heart and soul of the beast, which I just love. Plus, she's plucky, which I like.
