Pet Peeves

Okay, I was going to post about something else, but that'll have to wait. Instead, I have to point you toward Janna Qualman's post. I laughed my butt off, but that might just be me. You see, she and I suffer from the same pet peeve: people spelling our names with only one n. Janna decided to set the record straight so people could learn how to spell her name correctly. I often tease people when I first get to know them that my name has two n's, but in reality, it drives me nuts. So, for the record, my name is spelled...

*drum roll*

L-Y-N-N-E-T-T-E

Blame it on my dad. My mom had originally spelled it with one n, but my dad insisted since it's Lynn + ette, it should be spelled that way.

What about you? Do you have a name that's hard to spell?  What's your pet peeve?

  1. ROFL! This is great. Thanks for the dual post!

  2. Diane is normally spelled with one N, but I get two occasionally. What drives me nuts is when they misspell my last name, even after I tell them it's Wolf with an E.

  3. My last name is O'Donnell (not an uncommon name or an uncommon spelling), but when I tell people they always want to spell it O'Donald.

    Drives me nuts! :-)

  4. My wife, named Christina, who introduces herself as such, is always called Christine. She hates that. Call her Christy, and she might just explode :)

  5. Haha...I always spell lynn with two n's cause my ex's middle name was spelled like that. Using one n is weird for me. XD

  6. People spell my name right, but mispronounce it. It's not like maca-roni. But I understand the confusion.

I'm sure it's very frustrating about the spelling. That's why I when I named my son Marshall, I went with the traditional spelling even though Marshal looked kind of cool.

  7. Well....there's no mispronouncing Stephanie and I have the plain old boring spelling...so no worries there. My daughter though...her name is Jaden and we spelled it the simplest way so she would never have to worry about spelling it out to people. But guess what....everyone puts either a y or an i in it.

  8. Not only is my last name mispelled more than spelled correctly (Kohlstrom) but I also get called by my husband's last name, which is a great name, but not mine! (Yes, I've kept my maiden name!)

  9. My name is Roz, which seems to cause no end of problems. It rhymes with 'Wizard of Oz', but I commonly get called Rose or Ross. And Rosemary, Rosie and Roxy.

But I used to know a guy called Yuri Bender, so I suppose things could be worse.

  10. Yes, but I can't tell you what it is. That's why I go by Elle. :)

  11. People have destroyed my name since kindergarden! Urg! But my last name is so easy to spell it really annoys me that everyone wants to insert a T!

E-A-S-O-N! Not T in there people!

  12. You wouldn't think one could misspell Matt, but I see it all the time with only one T. Seriously? One T? Why bother? Who do these people know who spells Matt with one T? And why transfer it to me?

  13. My family name is impossible to pronounce correctly unless you've heard it before, let alone spell! It's 'Boughan'... but the four letters in the middle are silent, and it's pronounced "BAWN". Apparently it's Irish... my theory is that when my ancestors came over and registered with the town officials, they must have been drunk... how ELSE do you get a spelling like that?!

  14. I can tell you for a fact it is a new trend to take a normal name and spell it funny. Not sure why. Not that yours is this way.

  15. I don't want to post my daughter's name but people spell it wrong all of the time. I'll use Jenae as an example.

Say it's spelled like this - J E N A E. We get all sorts of variations even from people we've known for forever. Janee. Janea. Jane. Janae. Hardly ever the correct way. I think it bothers her more than it bothers me!

  16. when people *know*my daughter's name is pronounced Ah-na, but they pronounce it with a short A sound instead, as if it doesn't matter how the name Anna is pronounced.

  17. You want to hear something sad? My name is Kimberly. Easy and common. Not even a weird spelling, yet people still can't get it right!

    Great post!

  18. Everyone is always spelling my name wrong, so I know how you feel!

  19. My last name gets pronounced wrong all the time. It's spelled Loewer, but pronounced lower (as in the opposite of higher). It gets pronounced like louder with a W instead of D.

My biggest pet peeve is people who insist on shortening your kids' names without asking what we call them. I showed up for my son's first day of kindergarten and had to add the end of his name to everything. It's on the school records as the full name, so I don't know why the teacher did that. She hadn't even met him! To me, it's like calling him Fred or John. It's NOT his name.

Hmm, can you tell how much it drives me crazy??

  20. My name is Rebekah, and I get everything from Rebecca to Rebekka to Rebelaj (cable company) to Rebelan and Rebekan (both by the same company - who can't get it right no matter how they try).

My best friend spells her name just like you do, but our office's secretary spells it with just one N, and since I write her name more often, I have to stop and really think before I write my best friend's name. After all, it would not do to mess THAT one up!!

  21. I'm Karin Beery. I always get Karen Berry. But that's not as bad as Karen Beery...because that's my mother-in-law!

I used to be a Van Buren and desperately wanted my husband to create a new last name so we could be Van Beery (and I wouldn't have the same name as his mom). He didn't really go for it.

  22. Yeah, my maiden name was Barber, and people called me Barbera. I think they glazed over when they saw Myrna because they didn't want to say it wrong.

Faith, mispronounced Irish name High Five!

  23. I'm with your dad, Lynnette. The two N's work well. I'll do my best to be sure and remember the correct spelling. Since I like to use fun little devices, I'll think of you as Lynn-Naturally Nice-ette.

Both my first and last names are hard for people to spell. I've got my spiel down for when I have to give them over the phone.

    "It's K-E-one L-I and G like Girl-W-Y like You-N."

Even though I deal with my name being misspelled frequently, I love how unique it is. According to my research on Google, I'm the only Keli Gwyn out there, which is kinda cool.

  24. Christa bothers me VERY much.
So does Kristy, Kristi, or Christy.

    It's K-R-I-S-T-A.

UH at the end, the EE.

People get my daughter's name wrong all the time, but thankfully they usually asked how to spell it. It's Karalynn. Not carolyn, or Caroline. Kara.... Lynn... but one word.

She shortens it to Kara a lot to avoid confusion:-)

  25. Oh, you guys are wonderful! Thanks for the great laughs. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who suffers from this misery. Unfortunately, as careful as I thought I was when selecting names for my twins, they are going through similar problems. One is often misspelled and the other mispronounced. Sorry, girls. I tried. :)

  26. Glynis Smy...yes that is with one n...no not Glenis, no...one n...yes one n...S M Y...yes three letters...no not t h e on the end...S M Y...it is three letters long...oh yes OK that is my name, my parents and DH got it all wrong. Glynis Smy doesn't exist and Glenniss Smythe does, I stand corrected.
    Guessed my peeve Lynnette? LOL

  27. Everytime I give my name to people taking my order, they always want to know how to spell it. So I just tell them it's Jane.
    Problem solved.
