Is He Going to Propose?

I came across an article on MSN today titled Five Signs He’s About to Propose by Christie Griffin. Could one of my characters use this advice? I had to read to find out.

1. He’s extra helpful. Couldn’t this also mean he has a guilt complex because he’s done something wrong? Just thinking…
2. He talks himself up. Maybe he’s really vain. Or maybe he’s so insecure he feels like he needs to convince people (including himself) how great he is. There’s also the possibility that he thinks you’re not so into him and he needs to convince you he’s worth the effort.
3. He acts like you just started dating. See reasoning for #2 and apply it here.
4. He quizzes you. Maybe he’s writing your biography. Or maybe he’s planning on setting you up with a friend of his.
5. He’s really concerned about the details. Maybe he’s finally showing his true obsessive side. Maybe he’s on a new drug.

Okay, so the article wasn’t all that helpful because those signs can mean more than “he’s about to propose”. However, if my hero should decide to pop the question to my heroine, I might go back to this list and make sure he follows “the rules”.

What would make you think he was about to propose? How would you like the hero to act if he should happen to consider “The Big Step”?

  1. Hey again, Lynnette,
I noticed that you have twins. I do too. Mine are girls and are nine now! They're absolutely nothing alike anymore!

Sorry that I can't add much about how my heroes propose. Mine have been big losers so far in their wooing attempts! But it makes it really fun to write and keeps the tension going until the end.

  2. I gotta agree. That article is not helpful.
Honestly, when my hubby proposed it just came out of the blue for me. I wasn't really expecting it, so looking back, I don't know what the signs were. LOL

  4. Signs that a proposal is coming... suddenly secretive. Lots of extra smiles for no reason. Random phone calls that may not make sense. Letting it alll hang out there just to check?

Then again, when my husband proposed, I was "uh-huh"ing what he was saying while reading the spa menu at the hotel we were staying and and totally ignoring him, so what do I know?

  5. Interesting list. I don't know how I could recognize the signs of a man ready to propose because I was clothelined. I'll put some thought into it though!

  7. I didn't see any of those signs either. I think Michelle is right on though.

  8. Hey, I have twins as well. Mine are just about to turn 7 :)

As for the proposal. Hmmmm. Those signs could mean lots of things. I'd prefer no signs" and total surprise!

Is there some of your writing that I could read???

  9. Wow! Two more twin moms in the group. I love it!

Michelle: That's funny! I'll bet he didn't think so. Talk about catching you off guard though!

Terri: I always love to meet another romance writer. *cyber handshake*

Kathy: I don't have anything published yet. I haven't written anything I felt was publishable until now. The romantic suspense novel I'm working on is going to be in stores some day. I know it. ;)

As for how my husband proposed??? Well, you'll have to wait. In the next few weeks, I'm going to share bits and pieces of my life so you can get to know me. Don't worry. My blog won't just be about me. I'll still include all the wonderful tid bits you have come to love.

  10. Hm, I like a quiet, softly lit setting. I like the idea of him surprising me completely. I should have met his family, of course, and they should be warm, very warm (because they know he is in love).

He should be a little giddy, and that is not "normal" for him. My own husband acted drunk with no wine from nerves.
